PROJECT WINDY

Wind turbine featuring a variable-diameter diffuser

Introducing WINDY

WINDY is an advanced next-generation wind turbine designed for maximum efficiency and operational stability in variable weather conditions. Its unique feature is a variable-diameter diffuser, which allows the turbine to operate efficiently across a much wider range of wind speeds compared to traditional designs.

The project was developed in response to a key challenge in wind energy – the low efficiency and instability of turbines under changing weather conditions. WINDY addresses this issue through active airflow regulation, resulting in up to a 60% increase in efficiency compared to conventional solutions.

How Does the Diffuser Work?

The operation of WINDY’s diffuser is based on the Venturi effect – a physical phenomenon where airflow accelerates through a narrowing channel. However, the diffuser in WINDY does not have a fixed shape – its diameter automatically adjusts depending on wind strength.

Thanks to wind speed sensors and an automatic control system, the design continuously adapts to current conditions, maximizing energy production and minimizing losses.

Studies have confirmed that incorporating the diffuser into the turbine can increase its efficiency by 30–60% compared to turbines without this feature.

RESEARCH AND TESTING

As part of the project, a series of analyses and tests were conducted:

  • Numerical simulations (CFD) confirming the Venturi effect in action
  • Laboratory tests – analyzing system performance in a wind tunnel
  • Field tests – real-world turbine operation under variable weather conditions

The results confirmed that the diffuser significantly increases turbine efficiency and allows it to operate in conditions where conventional turbines would fail.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

WINDY has gained recognition in the scientific community:

  • Project of the Year 2021 in the StRuNa competition
  • 2nd place in the Student Construction Competition “KOKOS”, Ecology category
  • Semi-finalist in the “Great Challenge: Energy” competition (NCBiR)

We would also like to highlight that the variable-diameter diffuser mechanism used in the WINDY turbine has been submitted for a patent as a unique and pioneering solution in the field of wind energy.
